Counting the countries you have been to
The total counts each country once, out of 197. The land-area figure is different: visiting Russia, Canada or China adds far more of the world's surface than a dozen small European states. The map uses the Natural Earth projection, a compromise projection that keeps sizes roughly honest; on a Mercator map, Greenland and Russia would look far bigger than they are (see the true size of countries).
Continent bars follow the six inhabited continents used across Mapology. For the US, use the states visited map. To learn the map rather than tick it off, play the countries of the world quiz.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a map of the countries I have visited?
Tap each country you have been to on the map above, or type its name and press Enter. The counter shows your total, your share of the list and of the world's land area. "Copy share link" saves the exact map in a URL, and "Save PNG" downloads an image.
How many countries are there to visit?
This map lists 197: the 193 UN member states, the two UN observer states (Vatican City and Palestine), plus Kosovo and Taiwan. Most counts quote 195. See how many countries there are for why the number changes.
What counts as visiting a country?
There is no official rule. A common standard is that you entered the country and spent time there; airport transits usually do not count. Pick a rule and apply it to your whole list.
Why can't I find some small countries on the map?
Very small island countries are only a few pixels wide on a world map. Type the name into "Add by name" to mark them. Tuvalu is missing from the map outlines we use (Natural Earth 1:50m), so it cannot be shaded.
Is my list stored anywhere?
Only in this browser, using local storage. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Reset clears it.
